The University of Birmingham
The University of Birmingham is a founding member of the Russell Group and Universitas 21 and is a prestigious, world-leading educational institution. 35,000 students of more than 150 different nationalities study at Birmingham. The green and spacious campus is just minutes from the centre of Birmingham, the UK’s vibrant second city which can be reached via a 10 minute train journey from the University’s train station.
The University Campus
The architecture on campus includes the original domed, red-brick Aston Webb building which houses the Great Hall. It was built in 1900 and forms a semi-circle around Chancellor’s Court. At the heart of the campus is the ‘Old Joe’ clock tower, which is the largest freestanding clock tower in the world. Officially the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, this building is named in honour of the University’s first Chancellor. Nearby is The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, a Grade-I listed art deco building built in 1939 that houses an outstanding art collection, where you can see masterpieces by Botticelli, Rubens, Gainsborough, Turner and Rossetti, as well as Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir and Van Gogh. As the university has grown over the years new buildings have appeared on campus showcasing a wide array of architecture and innovative design such as the new ‘golden’ Library that opened in 2016. In addition the University boasts a new, state-of-the-art sports centre including Birmingham’s only 50m swimming pool, as well as a large multi-sport hall, a range of activity and fitness studios, a very extensive gym and six glass-backed squash courts.
The Conference Venue
The conference venue is another building opened in 2016, ‘The Alan Walters Building’. The Alan Walters Building is in the heart of the campus and provides a bright, comfortable space for delegates with communal areas for networking as well as a Harvard style lecture theatre and a number of well equipped and spacious breakout rooms.
